Chin surgery (mentoplasty) is a surgical procedure to reshape or enhance the size of the chin. There are two ways to achieve a more desirable shape to the chin. One way is by moving or reshaping the bone. Another way is through the surgical placement of a chin implant.
Chin implant surgery is often performed in combination with other surgical procedures, usually a rhinoplasty and/or neck liposuction.
Dr. Bryan Ambro is a double board certified facial plastic surgeon. He performs chin implant procedures in our outpatient center at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland.
Chin Implant Surgery – What to Expect
Chin augmentation is generally performed under general anesthesia in our outpatient plastic surgery center.
There are several surgical methods, Dr. Ambro will select one that is best to achieve your desired goals. In some cases, an incision can be made inside the mouth. Other times, the incision will be made under the chin to the pocket in front of the chin bone.
Dr. Ambro will select from a variety of chin implant materials. These may include your own bone, fat tissue, or an implant made from silicone or other biological material.
Once the chin implant is in place, it will be secured, and the incision will be closed.
The immediate recovery from chin implant surgery usually lasts from several days to a week. You may experience swelling for up to six weeks, and numbness in the chin can last up to 3 months.
